Pattern 02Business onboardingClosed out in Control

The ProcessArc Pattern Library

Why new business members open one account and stop.

A pattern we see across banks and credit unions. Onboarding built one product at a time, redesigned around what the business actually needs.

Or calculate what this pattern costs you

Chapter 1 of 7 · The pattern

The first visit decides the whole relationship.

A new business member arrives with needs: an account to run the business from, a way to pay staff and suppliers, a card, perhaps a credit line. Most onboarding processes ask about none of them.

Onboarding built product by product sells one product at a time: usually just the first.

Each product added over the years brought its own form, its own system and its own questions. The member pays for that in time, and the institution pays in relationships that never grow.

This pattern walks through one real engagement. Not because it's unusual, but because it isn't.

Chapter 2 of 7 · How to spot it

6 signs this pattern is in your operation.

If three or more sound familiar, the rest of this pattern is probably about you.

  1. 01

    Longer than you'd think

Opening a business membership takes 45 minutes or more, before a second product is even discussed. Time one and see.

  2. 02

    A form for every product

Each product has its own application, so adding a second product means starting again.

  3. 03

    Same data, many systems

Staff key the same details into several systems, with nothing to catch mistakes.

  4. 04

    Online access waits

Online banking isn't live when the member leaves. Activation takes days, and some enrollments fail.

  5. 05

    Needs assessment optional

A needs conversation exists on paper but is rarely completed.

  6. 06

    One product, then silence

Few business members add anything beyond the basic accounts, and many go inactive.

Question 1 of 8Pattern 02: Business onboarding
Has your business onboarding process gone more than 12 months without being mapped end to end, step by step?

Counts double. An unmapped process is where the other problems hide.

Takes about two minutes
